Confessions of an Oven Cleaner #1

Some months ago I decided I needed a change of career, I was fed-up with the morning commute, the same boring work everyday and the inflexibility of routine office hours, not to mention the madness of the dreaded quarter end reporting. So I decided to turn my back on twenty odd years in financial services and turn to a Life of Grime.

Why Oven Cleaning? Well after said twenty odd years immersed in banking, pensions and investments I wanted a complete changeof scenery. The inspiration came from my family's own situation, full-time working parents with barely enough spare time to keep the house clean and tidy never mind cleaning the oven or cooker. So I did the research and found a growing market in 'jobs that no-one likes doing'. Oven cleaning was right at the top of the list.

So Life of Grime was borne from a desire to change my work/life balance for the better. I wanted to have more flexibility for my family and home life and build a business that I could shape and build on the foundations of great customer service and excellent value.

Three months down the line I couldn’t have imagined it working out as well as it has. Turns out Grime does pay!

I no longer have the Sunday fear, the soulless commute to Edinburgh on the train or the pressures of working in a financial office day in and day out. In the past three months I’ve met loads of fantastic people and their feedback and reviews have been overwhelming.

My life has changed unbelievably and now my job satisfaction comes from the reaction of my customers when they see their sparkling oven. I’m genuinely proud of the work I do and I can’t wait for my next challenge and to meet my next customer. The dirtier they are the cleaner they become, so stick the kettle on I'm on my way.
