Christmas has come and gone like a massive party popper, one big bang and a heap of mess to clear up. The bins are rammed full, the oven is dirty...again, the Christmas lights have gone out and the decorations are back in the loft (or still sitting in the hall, waiting to go into the loft more like). The New Year celebrations are now flatter than week old prosecco and if you were lucky enough to be on holiday for the whole festive period, that alarm call on Monday morning was probably like an army drill sergeant waking up the barracks.
Now January is upon us! The dark dreary morning commute, impending credit card bills and an extra week to work until the monthly salary hits the bank. Last Thursday was apparently the day we were all most likely to start an affair AND don't forget Blue Monday on 14th January. Marry all that with the guilt of festive over indulgence and don't even start with bloody Br*xit!
How utterly depressing!
On the other hand, January is the beginning of a brand spanking, shiny new year, a new start, a line in the sand where we make resolutions to change our lives, even for a short while, for the better. Maybe to eat more healthily, or lose some weight and get fitter, to get that job or career change you really want or even just a promise to yourself to try new experiences.
It's a time of hope, optimism, for planning summer holidays and all the other good things the coming year will bring.
It's only a few weeks until the six nations rugby championship, a personal highlight, then there's Easter holidays and lighter nights, better weather...hopefully, summer barbeques, wearing shorts and flip flops etc etc. The year has to start somewhere!
So what of last year's resolutions?
Well, personally I made a life changing resolution and decided to pack in my job and start Life of Grime Oven Cleaning. A fairly massive change and one I still look back on now and think Wow! Did I really do that?". I completely surprised myself, but such was my unhappiness with my work/life balance I had to make a change to be happier.
Do I regret it? Not for a second, not even when I'm elbow deep inside the dirtiest oven do I regret it. Not even when I'm stuck in a jam at Sheriffhall, not even when I'm standing in the rain cleaning the oven racks which have been soaking in the van. Not even then.
So you see New Year resolutions can change your life and it all starts in January the month of hope!
As for this year? This year I've given up the booze....just until the six nations though!
Happy New Year!
